Understanding the Benefits of Caring for Your Whole Self
When we think about wellness, we often think about eating healthy, exercising, or taking care of our physical bodies. While those things are important, but true wellness goes much deeper. Holistic wellness is about caring for the whole person: mind, body, emotions, energy, and spirit. Instead of focusing on just one area of your well-being, holistic wellness recognizes that all parts of you are connected.
When one area feels out of balance, it can affect the others. Stress at work can impact your sleep. Emotional overwhelm can leave you feeling physically exhausted. Feeling disconnected from yourself can affect your confidence, relationships, and overall sense of well-being.
Holistic wellness encourages us to slow down, become more aware of what we need, and create practices that support us as a whole. That’s where I came up with my name: zenjennholistic. When I practice Reiki with my clients, I focus on their whole being. I offer an experience that will benefit not only their energy, but their mind, body and spirit.
What Does Holistic Wellness Look Like?
Holistic wellness can look different for everyone. There isn't one perfect routine or formula for creating balance. It may include nourishing your body with foods that make you feel good, moving your body in ways you enjoy, getting enough rest, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, setting healthy boundaries, working through emotions, or creating space for spiritual connection.
It can also include practices such as Reiki, meditation, breathwork, journaling, crystal work, and aromatherapy with essential oils. The goal isn't to do everything. It's about discovering what helps you feel grounded, connected, supported, and more like yourself.
The Benefits of Holistic Wellness
Creating a holistic wellness practice can support many different areas of your life.
1. Greater Self-Awareness
Holistic wellness encourages you to check in with yourself instead of constantly moving through life on autopilot.
You may begin asking:
How am I really feeling? What does my body need today?
Where am I holding tension?
What emotions have I been avoiding?
What is draining my energy?
The more aware you become, the easier it can be to recognize when something feels out of alignment and make intentional changes.
2. Stress Management
Life will always have stressful moments, but holistic practices can give you tools for navigating them. Meditation, deep breathing, Reiki, journaling, time in nature, and creating moments of stillness can all become part of your personal stress-management toolkit. Even taking five minutes to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself can make a difference in how you approach the rest of your day.
3. Emotional Well-Being
Holistic wellness isn't about ignoring difficult emotions or trying to "stay positive" all the time. Instead, it's about creating a safe space to acknowledge what you're experiencing. Journaling, mindfulness, Reiki, coaching, meditation, and other supportive practices can help you become more aware of your emotions and develop a deeper relationship with yourself. Healing isn't about never having difficult days. It's about learning how to support yourself through them.
4. Feeling More Grounded and Centered
Have you ever felt like your mind was going in a hundred different directions? Grounding practices can help you reconnect with the present moment. Walking barefoot in nature, spending time outside, taking intentional breaths, practicing Reiki, meditating, or simply putting your phone down and being present can help you create moments of calm and connection.
5. A Deeper Connection With Yourself
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of holistic wellness is learning to listen to yourself. When you're constantly focused on what everyone else needs, it can be easy to lose touch with your own needs and intuition.
Holistic wellness invites you to turn inward and ask: What do I need right now? That simple question can become incredibly powerful.
Holistic Wellness Tools You Can Use
There are many different tools that can support your wellness journey. You don't need to use all of them. Experiment with different practices and notice what resonates with you!
Reiki Energy Healing
Reiki is a gentle energy-based practice that can be used as a complementary wellness practice to encourage relaxation and a sense of balance. During a Reiki session, a practitioner channels life force energy, while creating a calming environment for relaxation and reflection.
Reiki can be incorporated into a holistic wellness routine alongside meditation, journaling, mindfulness, coaching, and other self-care practices. Whether you're feeling emotionally overwhelmed, mentally scattered, or simply craving some quiet time for yourself, Reiki can provide an intentional opportunity to slow down and reconnect.
Crystals
Crystals can be wonderful tools for creating intentional rituals. Different crystals are traditionally associated with different intentions and energetic qualities. For example:
Clear Quartz – Often associated with clarity and intention setting.
Amethyst – Traditionally connected with peace, intuition, and spiritual practices.
Rose Quartz – Commonly associated with self-love, compassion, and emotional softness.
Black Tourmaline – Often used in grounding and energetic-protection rituals.
Citrine – Traditionally associated with positivity, confidence, and abundance.
You can carry a crystal with you, place one on your meditation space, hold one while journaling, or simply use it as a physical reminder of the intention you're working toward. The power of a crystal ritual doesn't have to come from the crystal itself. It can also come from the intention and mindfulness you bring to the practice.
Essential Oils
Aromatherapy can be another beautiful addition to your wellness routine. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, and different oils are commonly used for different aromatherapy purposes. For example:
Lavender – Often used to create a calming, relaxing atmosphere.
Peppermint – Commonly used for an invigorating and refreshing aroma.
Frankincense – Often incorporated into meditation and grounding rituals.
Orange – Frequently used to create an uplifting, cheerful environment.
Essential oils can be incorporated into diffusing, personal rituals (like mixing with lotion or coconut oil), or other appropriate aromatherapy practices. Always follow product safety directions, and remember that some oils can irritate the skin or be unsafe around children, pets, or during pregnancy.
Journaling
Never underestimate the power of putting your thoughts onto paper. Journaling can help you process emotions, recognize patterns, explore your beliefs, and become more intentional about what you want.
Try asking yourself:
"What do I need more of in my life right now?"
Then ask:
"What do I need less of?"
Your answers may reveal more than you expect.
Meditation and Breathwork
You don't need to meditate for an hour to experience the benefits of creating moments of stillness. Start with just a few minutes.
Close your eyes, take a slow breath in, and allow yourself to fully exhale. Notice your body. Notice your thoughts without judging them. Give yourself permission to simply be.
Over time, these small moments can become an important part of your wellness practice.
Wellness Is About Balance, Not Perfection
One of the biggest misconceptions about wellness is that you have to have everything figured out. You don't. There will be days when you eat nourishing foods and move your body. There will also be days when you need to rest. There will be days when you feel grounded and connected, and days when you feel completely overwhelmed. That's part of being human.
Holistic wellness isn't about creating a perfect life. It's about developing the awareness and tools to support yourself through all of life's seasons. Your physical health, emotional well-being, mental state, relationships, energy, and spiritual life are all interconnected. When you begin caring for yourself as a whole person rather than focusing on just one piece, you can create a deeper sense of connection and balance.
Start small. Listen to yourself. Give yourself permission to explore what feels supportive.Your wellness journey is uniquely yours, and you don't have to walk it perfectly. You simply have to keep coming back to yourself.
